Type D National Visa Checklist for Italy Students (2026): Complete Document List

Most Type D visa applications from Bangladesh don't get delayed because a student failed academically or financially. They get delayed because one document in the file was missing, outdated, or in the wrong format. This page exists to remove that risk entirely. It's not another narrative guide explaining what a student visa is. It's the actual checklist, organized by category, so you can work through it item by item before your VFS appointment.

What Is a Type D Visa, and Who Needs This Checklist

A Type D visa is Italy's national long stay visa, issued to non EU applicants, including Bangladeshi students, who plan to stay in Italy for more than 90 days. If your program lasts a full academic year or longer, this is the visa category that applies to you, not the short stay Schengen "C" visa used for tourism or short business trips.

At Study Abroad in Italy, we build this checklist from the documents the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka and VFS Global actually request, rather than a generic list that could apply to any Schengen country. If you're at the point of assembling your visa file, this is the list to work from.

How This Checklist Is Organized

Rather than one long paragraph of requirements, this guide breaks the checklist into six categories: identity, academic, financial, language, insurance and accommodation, and appointment day items. Work through each section, tick off what you already have, and treat anything you're missing as your priority task for the week.

Identity Documents Checklist

DocumentWhat it needs to show
Valid passportValidity covering your intended stay, with at least two blank pages
Passport photocopyClear copy of the biographical data page
Passport size photographMeets standard Schengen visa photo requirements, plain background
National ID or birth certificateFor verifying personal details where requested

Academic and Universitaly Documents Checklist

DocumentWhat it needs to show
Universitaly pre enrollment confirmationProof that your application was submitted and processed on the portal
University admission or enrollment letterOfficial confirmation from your Italian university
Academic transcripts and certificatesHSC and SSC for Bachelor applicants, or Bachelor's degree and transcripts for Master's applicants
Declaration of Value (DoV) or CIMEA certificateOr proof that your DoV application is already submitted

If you haven't completed the Universitaly stage yet, our full walkthrough on the Universitaly portal guide for Bangladeshi students covers registration through submission in detail, and everything in this section assumes that process is already finished.

Financial Proof Checklist

DocumentWhat it needs to show
Bank statement or solvency certificateSufficient funds to cover tuition and living costs for the program duration
Sponsorship or guarantor letter, if applicableFinancial backing from an accepted relative
Scholarship confirmation, if applicableCoverage amount and duration, if funding is scholarship based
Good to know: According to the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka's own guidance, accepted guarantors extend beyond immediate parents. Financial proof from grandparents, siblings, uncles, aunts, and cousins is also accepted, including relatives who reside in Italy or hold Italian citizenship. Confirm which category applies to your situation before assuming you need funds entirely in your own name.

Language Proficiency Documents Checklist

DocumentWhat it needs to show
Language certificateIssued by a globally recognized institute or university
Proficiency breakdownMust clearly state oral comprehension, written comprehension, and speaking ability separately, not a single combined score

A generic school letter mentioning "English medium instruction" is not sufficient on its own. If you're unsure which certificate applies to your specific program, our language requirements guide breaks this down by course and university type.

Health Insurance and Accommodation Documents Checklist

DocumentWhat it needs to show
Health insurance policyCoverage for medical emergencies and repatriation for your full intended stay
Proof of accommodation in ItalyUniversity housing confirmation, rental agreement, or a formal invitation letter
Return flight intention or travel plan, where requestedDemonstrates a defined arrival plan tied to your program start date

VFS Appointment Day: What to Physically Bring

The checklist above gets your file ready. What you actually carry into the appointment is a separate, practical step. Our detailed walkthrough of the VFS Italy Dhaka visa appointment process covers exactly how that appointment is booked and what to expect once you're there, including the appointment confirmation letter you'll need to bring along with everything on this checklist.

Common Checklist Mistakes That Cause Delays

  • Submitting a language certificate with only a general score, rather than one that separately confirms oral, written, and speaking proficiency
  • Using financial documents from a relative outside the Embassy's accepted guarantor categories, without confirming eligibility first
  • Forgetting the Declaration of Value or CIMEA certificate entirely, since it's easy to assume Universitaly and university admission alone are sufficient
  • Bringing photocopies where originals are required, or the reverse
  • Health insurance that doesn't explicitly cover repatriation, which some basic travel policies exclude

Frequently Asked Questions About the Type D Visa Checklist

What documents are required for an Italy Type D student visa from Bangladesh?
The core categories are identity documents, academic and Universitaly confirmation, financial proof, a language certificate meeting the Embassy's specified format, and health insurance with repatriation coverage. The full breakdown by category is listed above.
Do I need a Declaration of Value for a Type D student visa?
Yes, or a CIMEA certificate as an alternative. Your visa file needs either the completed document or proof that your application is already submitted, since this confirms your academic qualifications are formally recognized in Italy.
Can a relative other than my parents provide financial proof for my visa?
Yes. The Embassy of Italy in Dhaka accepts financial guarantees from parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles, aunts, and cousins, including those residing in Italy or holding Italian citizenship.
Is a general English proficiency letter enough for the language requirement?
Not usually. The Embassy requires a certificate from a globally recognized institute or university that separately confirms oral comprehension, written comprehension, and speaking ability, rather than a single combined statement.
Does health insurance need to cover repatriation specifically?
Yes. Basic travel insurance sometimes excludes repatriation coverage, so confirm this explicitly with your provider before submitting it as part of your file.
What is the difference between this checklist and the general Italy visa requirements guide?
This page is deliberately built as a scannable, category by category checklist you can work through directly. Our broader guides cover the full application narrative and process context in more depth.

Completing Your Checklist With Support

A checklist only helps if every item on it is actually correct for your specific program and profile, which is exactly where a second set of experienced eyes makes the difference. Our visa assistance service reviews each of these categories against your actual file before your VFS appointment, and if you're still finalizing your university choice, our full list of partner universities can help you confirm admission requirements alongside this checklist.
